SUPPORT
The Colombian Association has played an important role of support
by helping not only the Colombians living in the Dallas-Fort
Worth Metroplex, but also the ones living in Colombia by sending
help through several organizations.
In the Metroplex:
- Collected donations for Leidy Tamayo, a 6 year old girl
that required treatment of a brain tumor.
- Donated money to the soccer teams that represented Colombia
in the Dallas Cup.
- Many members of the Association volunteered in the World
Cup.
- Donated money and clothing to Proyecto Esperanza, and
organization that helps the Hispanics with AIDS.
- Collected articles of basic necessities for the Venezuelans
affected by a severe flood on January 2000.
In Colombia:
- Earthquake in Colombia In January 25, 1999 the Coffee
growing area of Colombia was destroyed by an earthquake.
The Association organized several events to raise funds,
and opened a bank account to facilitate direct deposit of
donations.
- Three members of the Board of Directors traveled to Colombia
to evaluate the situation and provide direct help. As a
result of this trip, six low-income families were given
homes.
- The Hospital of Saint Joseph in Montenegro was given medicines
and medical equipment, and a working connection was established
between Dallas and the region affected by the earthquake.
- Other donations were sent in a 53 feet truck that traveled
from Dallas to Armenia, via Houston and Buenaventura.
- The San Juan de Dios Hospital in Armenia was given several
surgical components.
- The Association in conjunction with Fundacion Quindio
Siglo 21, contributed to the construction of the rural school
"El Roble" in Circacia, Quindio. This school was destroyed
during the earthquake; now it has room for 60 children between
the ages of 4 and 10 years.
- The Association, in conjunction with Junta Pro-Aguinaldo
del Niņo Quindiano, sent money for the reconstruction of
a Docent Institution "El Caimo", Quindio. On December 17,
1999 the school was inaugurated with the presence of members
of the Association, the secretary of Education of the State,
the school principal and other dignitaries.
- The Association has sent money to the Fundacion Niņos
de los Andes and institution dedicated to rehabilitate homeless
children, giving them shelter and education. So far they
have helped 17,000 children.
CONTINUED SUPPORT
The Association offers continued support to:
- "ADELANTE" an organization of the Dallas Opera, dedicated
to promote the opera amongst Latin Americans.
- The Latin-American
Music Festival at TCU "Texas Christian University"
- The Colombian
Arts and crafts through silent auctions and other activities.
